Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What requirements are there when applying to the Griff Investment Fund?

The requirements when applying to the fund depend on which year you are in at the University of York.

If you are a first-year student, we do not expect any prior knowledge of financial markets or investment. Instead, we look for individuals who are motivated and willing to learn, team players and enthusiastic about financial markets and investing.

If you are a second-year student, we expect a greater level of knowledge than first year applicants but to still teach you the fundamentals of financial markets and investing. We would expect you to have prior knowledge of financial markets, financial ratios and potentially valuation techniques. But most important is your willingness to learn and enthusiasm for financial markets and investing.

If you are a third-year student, we expect you to have a high level of knowledge of financial markets and investing, such that we do not have to teach you anything new. Instead, we would look for you to be able to teach the fund a new skill, such as coding. The same applied if you are a master’s student.

Can I check your holdings?

Unfortunately, as we are managing a portion of the University’s endowment, we cannot publish our holdings and previous investments.

What support is there in the fund?

We provide training, mentorship and an extracurricular experience away from your day-to-day course.

How long does my membership last?

If you join the Fund, then you will have permanent membership during your time at the University, subject to our internal rules and regulations. It will also remain free of charge.

Does we accept Masters and PhD Students?

Yes. The same application rules apply for Master’s or PhD students that apply to third year applicants.
